Traveling from Florida to Texas in the “BASS On” Monster Truck owned by my friend David Partridge was a trip in and of itself, Flying down 1-10 West the 9-hour drive went by fast, talk about getting check out by everyone WOW! Arrived at the hotel around 7 pm central had dinner then straight to the room to settle down for media Day on Thursday.
Of course, I was one of the 1st to arrive and found a table somewhat in the middle of a bunch of other tables so I claim it as my own. The room started to fill with a list of who’s who in the media industry and then the Classic Anglers started to arrive. Another writer joined me we introduced ourselves and got ready for the presentation. At this point all the tables are filled, when out of nowhere comes a couple of younger anglers fishing the Classic, they asked if they could sit with us. By all means, please,.. since most every other spot was taken lol. So there we sat all 4 of us at an 8 man table,. One of the young guns on the tour across from me was pretty excited about fishing the event, he looked pretty laid back as he talked about his game plan and was hoping that he would have a respectable showing. His name was Jordan Lee and at 23 he is the youngest competitor on the BASS Elite Series and little did we know we picked the right table with no names on the chairs,. ”The Unreserved Table” if you will.
History was in the making in what turned out to be a battle all the way to the final day. Being from NorCal and on assignment, for “BHQ” Bass Angler Headquarter base on the West side, I won’t lie my pick was Brent Ehrler from Ca. who held a good 2 day lead going into Championship Sunday.
Jordan only weighed in 12 fish out of a possible 15 fish limit when on the last day he weighed a staggering 5 fish limit of 27.4 lb bag! Who is Jordan Lee? In 2013 he was fishing with the University of Auburn fishing team thinking someday he would be living the dream of fishing at the highest level. Needless to say, his hard work paid off with the Super Bowl of Bass fishing ultimate prize, The 2017 Bassmasters Classic Champion!! He overcame some adversity with engine troubles but never gave up. His baits of choice consisted of a football jig tip with Strike King Rage Craw, Space Monkey, and a Citrus Shad Strike King 5XD crankbait. Withstanding a strong charge by Steve Kennedy and a small fish bite by Brent Ehrler he was able to make a comeback the like we won’t forget anytime soon. The future is in good hands my friends the young guns on the tour are a hard working and respectful group earning their way to the top.
The table was set a couple of old writers and some young hopefuls talked about fishing and writing,.. The room has long been empty and cleaned little did we know the story was on our plates… Chomp On That friends!
