Déjà vu All Over Again: The BASSMASTER Classic 2018
Category : ANGLER’S POV, BASS TOURNAMENT NEWS
“Déjà vu all over again” is a phrase taken from a famous quotation attributed to Yogi Berra: This Classic is a prime example of what Yogi was talking about. The trip started the same as last year, riding shotgun in the “BASS ON” Monster truck owned by my friend David Partridge whose truck is the most googled truck on the internet. The excitement has been building for what is described as the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing, the BASSMASTER Classic! Covering the show for my friends from the UFC translated the Unemployed Fishing Club whose motto is “you don’t have to be unemployed to join but it helps” LOL and Bass Angler Headquarters, A Bass Fishing Resource, “Everything Bass All The Time.” in addition, BHQ is the place to go if you’re looking to get your own professional Angler website. I also need to mention my friends at Gillz Performance Apparel and Glacier Gloves for their support who make it all possible for me to attend.
Day one is Media Day where Bassmaster treats its writers/photographers and news outlets to a preview of things to come, they put on a great event as usual. It gives us time to catch up with old friends and the entire Elite Pro’s competing in the Big Show. The presentation was put on by Power Pole and they did a spectacular job! They have an unbelievable line up of new products that will blow your mind. Here’s a link detailing what’s coming from them, Power Pole. Following up was Bruce Akins, B.A.S.S. CEO who on to say, “Our goal has long been to provide cutting-edge content about our Classic and other tournaments, however, whenever and wherever fans want to consume it,” After the lunch and the presentation we were allowed to do our interviews along with the fans that showed up a few hours later. The Classic is turned into a shootout with almost everyone in contention including last year Champion Jordan Lee….. If you recall my article last year titled “The Unreserved Table” which had me sitting with Jordan at the Media Day lunch. What are the odds that a repeat was possible, we had a light moment when we talked about last year and maybe he should sit at my table again yeah right! LOL, little did we know history was in the making.
The early morning takeoffs have become an up close and personal draw for spectators. On the first day of the 2015 Classic on Lake Hartwell, more than 2,000 spectators crowded the Green Pond Landing and Event Center at Anderson — on a morning when the temperature was 10 degrees. With the Classic being held a month later and with warmer weather the crowds were HUGE, to say the least! Next stop was the ever popular Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo Presenting Sponsored by DICK’S Sporting Goods plus a bonus presentation by Academy Sports everyone was very impressed with the Company and how innovated the products they’re making are. The Academy line is geared to average angler at a price point and quality that might surprise you, along with the Mainstay fishing gear they sale be sure to give them a look, you may be surprised.
Two days of checking out the Expo and catching up with all the Vendors plus all my friends was exhausting but fun. Here’s my short list of folks I’d like to mention, Steve Parks with RageTail, Brad Kowalski with Evolution Baits, Steve Henderson with SeaArk Boats, Gary Dobyns of Dobyns Rods, Josh Roller with BassBoat4Sale.com, Trevor Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Rods, Shaw Grigsby Jr of One More Cast fishing show, Bernie Shultz touring pro, Kent Brown the Host of the Ultimate Bass Radio show on Sports 1140 the fan KHTK , Justin Lucas tour pro , David Swendseid with DUO, Greg Gutierrez with Frenzy Baits, terry Brown with Wired2Fish and a host of others. If you’ve never been to a Classic Expo put it on your bucket list!
The grand finale came to a head and Low and behold Yogi was right it was like “Déjà vu all over again” in what amounted to one of the most amazing Classic ever with Jordan Lee repeating as back to back champion at such a young age. Congrats my friend and to all the other anglers who fought to the very end with what amount to the narrowest margins ever, be sure to catch all the action on ESPSN2 beginning as follows:
