2012 Daiwa Cup Angler of the Year Champion
Category : BASS TOURNAMENT NEWS
Bass Angler Headquarters recently met up with TOP THIS pro Kevin Stewart from Elk Grove, CA. to talk about his 2012 Daiwa Cup Angler of the Year Championship on the WON BASS Tour. To be eligible for the prestigious Daiwa Cup a pro angler has to compete in all three of the WON BASS Pro/Am northern events, the three southern events and finish with the highest amount of points overall. Stewart succeeded this achievement in only his second year of competing for the title. He finished 5th overall in the northern events and 9th overall in the southern events ending the season a mere 6 points ahead on Shawn Lee.
“I am completely honored and excited to have won this Daiwa Cup, it has been a crazy year of ups and downs but in the end I was fortunate enough to come out on top. To have my name added to the list of Daiwa Cup Champions is just amazing” says Stewart.
Past champions include the likes of John Murray, Mike Folkestad, Gary Dobyns, Aaron Martens and Mike Reynolds to name a few.
To sum up the year, Stewart says “I started out at Shasta finishing 11th, not the finish I was hoping for considering I fell from 2nd on day two but it was a solid point start for the year. The next event at Havasu was a struggle and I ended up finishing 22nd. I rebounded at the third event on the Delta with an 8th place finish. I had high hopes at Roosevelt but only finished in 17th. Looking forward to the fifth event at Clear Lake did not work out because I was so far off the bite it was crazy, I finished in 35th and lost a lot of points going into the last event at my least favorite place Lake Mead. After day one at Mead I was sitting in 2nd place just like I had started the year and just like Shasta I fell on day two only this time down to finish 21st.”
Stewart will not be defending his Daiwa Cup Angler of the Year Championship title for the 2013 season as he will busy competing in his first year on the FLW Tour Majors. “I am so excited to be in a position where I can go and compete at this next level, this is something I have wanted to do for the last few years and now everything has come together. Making new friends and fishing new lakes against the best in the nation is going to be an unforgettable experience and I am going to enjoy every minute of it” says Stewart.
He also adds “None of this would be possible without the love and support from my wife Susan, my two beautiful daughters, my Mom, my brother, my friends, my employees and of course my great sponsors. A little over a year ago I was fortunate enough to meet Chuck Kavros with TOP THIS and I am proud to represent such a great company”.
Stewart’s sponsors are: TOP THIS, Mercury Marine, Phoenix Boats, Lowrance Electronics, Power Pole, Delta Marine Sales, Blade Runner Tackle, TNT Baits, D&M Custom Baits, Fisherman’s Warehouse, Endless Possibili-tees and Arena Tow.
