Shasta Lake – also called Lake Shasta, is a reservoir in Shasta County, California, United States. It is within the Whiskeytown–Shasta–Trinity National Recreation Area, operated by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
It is impounded by Shasta Dam, the second largest dam and tallest concrete dam in the United States. Known as the keystone of the Central Valley Project, the outflow of Shasta Dam provides electricity and irrigation water. It also provides Sacramento River flood control below the dam for the Sacramento Valley. It is also well-known as one of the best recreational lakes in the nation.
Shasta Lake is a two-story impoundment and provides habitat for both warm-water and coldwater fishes. Habitat for cold-water fish species within the lake is considered good and provide and largely maintained through Annual stocking by the California Department of Fish and Game. This provides a great food source for largemouth bass, spotted bass, smallmouth bass. Other species caught and also provide forage for the bass are; black crappie, bluegill, carp, Sacramento sucker, Sacramento squawfish, riffle sculpin, black fish, hardhead minnow, channel squawfish, threadfin shad, white catfish, brown bullhead, golden shiner and green sunfish. An older population of white sturgeon do exist in the lake as well.
