Justin Lucas – Season of Change
Category : FRONT DECK
A new season, a new tour and new sponsorships
2014 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the career of Professional Angler, Justin Lucas, as he joins the BASSMASTER Elite Series for his inaugural campaign. The Guntersville, Alabama Pro earned his spot in the Elites via a 4th place in the Bassmaster Northern Opens AOY, showcasing both his versatility and consistency. Lucas fished the Opens with the intention of trying to win an event and punch his ticket to the Bassmaster Classic on his home lake, Guntersville. When the opportunity to join the Elite Series became a reality, he was excited about the prospects. The decision to make the move from the FLW Tour to the Elite Series was not an easy one for Lucas who spent the last eight seasons working through the FLW ranks from co-angler to Touring Pro. “It (the decision) definitely weighed heavily on mind,” said Lucas. “I am grateful for everything that FLW has done for me, I plan to fish a number of the Rayovac Events this season.”
Lucas punctuated his Elite Series debut with a strong 10th place finish at Lake Seminole. “To start the year off the way that I have is a really good feeling because I did not know what to expect,” said Lucas, “Everybody says that you are just competing against the fish, but when you show up and see Van Dam and Skeet and Ike, the superstars of the sport, it was in the back of my mind. After the first day on Seminole when I had 17lbs and I was in 30th place I just felt really good and comfortable after that.”
When the Elite Series visited Florida for the second event of the season, Lucas turned in another solid performance as he sight fished his way to a 9th place result at the St. Johns River. “I knew I needed to get a couple of solid finishes real quick and I was just really fortunate to be able to do that,” added Lucas. With three events now in the books, Lucas sits in 10th place in the coveted Toyota Angler of the Year standings.
A new season, a new tour and new sponsorships. Lucas was excited to announce a new expanded relationship with Pure Fishing, a company that he has been involved with since 2007. “It is really a cool deal to work with a company of such high-caliber and respect in the industry. Abu rods and reels and Berkley baits and line, it’s the tackle I have been using for a long time now. My relationship with Pure Fishing has really helped make the transition that much easier.” explained the Elite Series Pro.
A.R.E. the makers of high fiberglass truck caps and tonneau covers has pledged its support to Lucas who will serve as a brand ambassador. Lucas’ Evinrude powered Ranger Tournament Boat will prominently display the Abu, Berkley and A.R.E. branding on the wrap.
On the Horizon
“I really want to make a long career out of fishing and I felt switching to B.A.S.S was the right decision. In the short-term I just want to continue to be consistent and make the Classic, the Classic is truly my number one goal.”
