2013 Elite Series Mississippi River Day 1 – Gamble pays off for Hawk
Category : HAWK TALK
Kevin Hawk took a chance, passing through the lock and dam at Dresbach, Minn., to reach Pool 7 of the Mississippi River, during the opening day of the Bassmaster Elite Series Mississippi River Rumble.
It paid big dividends.
Hawk caught 16 pounds worth of mighty Mississippi River bass, leaving him in second place — just 2.4 pounds behind leader Brandon Palaniuk — in the chase for $100,000 in prize money.
“I felt like I had the best opportunity to catch a big bag by going up there,” said Hawk of Guntersville, Ala. “It was a bit of a risk in that regard, but at the same time I thought it was worth it if it worked out. Luckily, it did.”
It wasn’t a big-time roll of the dice, however, as Hawk knew the lock-master would keep the gates open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. so tournament anglers could pass through. They also had a dedicated lock time of 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the afternoon.
Miss those times, however, and Hawk could have been staring at a barge locking through, which can take up to several hours. That could mean missing the weigh-in time, and watching any chance at winning float away.
