Day 3:

That’s why we say it’s unofficial

9:24 am CDT, Jun 5, 2015 | By Mike Suchan

Randy Howell continues to lead the unofficial BASSTrakk standings, but as we’ve mentioned before, human error can cause some overestimations, and vice versa.

Howell was listed with 19 pounds for a little bit, but his Marshal contacted the powers to see if that could be corrected to 18. He believed he enterered Howell’s 5-pounder twice. See, stuff happens. Unofficial. Estimates. You get it.

There’s been some movers, like Kevin Short, who has caught more fish in 2 ½ hours on Barkley than he did the first two days on Kentucky Lake (Thanks Steve Wright). Cliff Crochet has jumped into the mix, and least we not forget the fellas with big fish, meaning potential big bags when they fill their limit.

Here’s how things looked at 9:20, with angler, fish in livewell and weight.

Howell 5 17-0

Short 3, 9-5

Crochet 4, 8-8

Clark 2, 7-14

Hawk 2, 7-8

Rook 4, 6-13

Elias 5, 6-10

Feider 4, 6-8

Grigsby 3, 6-8

Omori 2, 6-8

Menendez 5, 6-7

Vinson 2, 6-4

Niggemeyer 2, 5-12

Palaniuk 1, 5-8

Broussard 2, 5-0

Update from Hawk’s marshal

10:00 am CDT, Jun 5, 2015

Kevin Hawk now has 3 in the box giving him about 9 lbs Unofficially in third place.

Standings update, minus those out of range

10:02 am CDT, Jun 5, 2015 | By Mike Suchan

While BASSTrakk is not accessible to the viewing public today, I have it and will give Second Chance updates. Randy Howell seems a lock to advance and head back from Barkley to Kentucky Lake to join the 50 sitting out today and working Bassmaster University.

Kevin Short has moved into second and Kevin Hawk third. They might have good shots at becoming the top 10 of the 74 fishing today to win their second chance to fish Saturday. Right now, there are 42 anglers with fish, but the unofficial rears its ugly head again when you consider cell service. Anglers fishing in dead spots aren’t having their catches recorded, meaning someone could be whacking them and never show up until they cruise into cell coverage.

So while Seth Feider, with four for 6-8 and standing 10th, might be looking like the last one in, it’s far from official. And the day is far from over.

Here’s the 10 a.m. standings, which, of course, are unofficial.

Howell 5, 18-0

Short 5, 12-5

Hawk 4, 9-0

Rook 5, 8-15

Crochet 4, 8-8

Clark 5, 7-14

Rowland 5, 7-7

Alton Jones 3, 7-6

Elias 5, 6-10

Feider 4, 6-8

Grigsby 3, 6-8

Omori 2, 6-8

Menendez 5, 6-7

Vinson 2, 6-4

Niggemeyer 2, 5-12

We have climbers, or maybe they just got into cell range. Chad Wiley rocketed up the unofficial BASSTrakk leaderboard with a limit estimated at 13-14. He still trails Randy Howell (18-0) and Kevin Short (14-4).

One angler with only four fish is looking good. Greg Vinson stands fifth with 12-8 but he’s one shy of a limit. Gary Clouse also jumped up in the top 10 at ninth with 5 for 9-13.

Check out the 11:30 standings.

An ounce could be worth $10,000

1:08 pm CDT, Jun 5, 2015

Terry Scroggins culled up to third, showing the importance of ounces in this Second Chance event. Only 10 anglers move on to fish Saturday, but it also means cashing a check. A few ounces will more likely decide who earns $10,000 and who goes home with empty pockets.

Not counting an angler who might be out of cell range and his fish not reported, Shaw Grigsby stands at the 1 p.m. check as the last man in. He has a limit of 12-1. Alton Jones, 11 ounces back, would be first out. Right behind him is James Niggemeyer at 11-4 and Cliff Pace at 11-3. Niggemeyer can catapult with his fifth fish.

Another aspect that will shake things up is the estimations of the fish being reported to BASSTrakk.

Grigsby said he thinks he’s around 13 pounds. That’s a full pound off what is listed. How many others are in the same boat.

Here’s the 1 p.m. standings.

Randy Howell 5, 18-5

Kevin Short 5, 14-4

Terry Scroggins 5, 14-10
