Football Time at Guntersville

It’s football season.

No, not THAT football season.

But Memorial Day Weekend is the traditional kickoff of another significant football season for Alabama anglers, the time when warming temperatures mean bass will finally settle back to the dependable “ledge pattern” in the TVA lakes, and when a heavy, “football head” jig is one of the best ways to put a 5-pounder in the boat, any time of the day or night.

Elite pro Kevin Hawk, now a resident of the Guntersville area, is a master at finding big bass on the river ledges. Here are some tips he offers area anglers:

First, put as much as you can afford into electronics.

“If you don’t have a big screen sonar with structure scan/side scan, you’ll have a hard time competing in any larger tournament these days–these units make it so much easier to visualize what’s down there, to see the bottom structure, the bait and the fish. You’re pretty much fishing blind without them, and that’s tough on a big lake like Guntersville.”
